Protein sorting and thylakoid biogenesis in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts of higher plants: In a first step, membrane proteins have to be targeted to the thylakoid membrane, inserted/translocated to the lipid bilayer by a translocon machinery, folded to functional proteins which are finally assembled to a membrane-localized protein complex (e.g. the photosystems PSI und PSII)
