Chloroplast-to-Nucleus Communication

The chloroplast is unique to plants and is the host of biosynthetic pathways and photosynthesis, the process in which sunlight is converted to chemical energy. Signals originating from chloroplasts and mitochondria modulate nuclear gene expression (retrograde signaling). The aim of our research is to understand how the signals are relayed to the nucleus. Those results will not only increase our understanding of photosynthesis regulation. But many of the components of signaling networks are common to many types of stimuli and are found in all organisms ranging from bacteria to humans. The knowledge derived from this project therefore advances our understanding of signal transduction per se.
To elucidate chloroplast-to-nucleus signaling pathways we are using a wide range of techniques that include biochemistry, mutant analysis, inducible RNAi and protein over-expression, reporter gene based screens, microarrays and biophysical and analytical approaches.
